The Return of the Lady

HBO's Boardwalk Empire
Louis Vuitton Fall 2010

This Fall, fashion is all about looking like a lady. Louis Vuitton had beautiful dresses that reminded us of a time when women had curves. The runways aren’t the only place revisiting this theme. HBO’s new show Boardwalk Empire, about prohibition in the 1920’s, might be centered around the violent and greedy men who started Atlantic City, but it’s the women who remind us how glamorous that time was. Prior to 1920 wearing make up was possibly dangerous because of chemicals and lead in the products. Besides the health risks associated with wearing make up then, proper girls weren’t encouraged to wear it. During the 1920’s there was a new carefree attitude, women were expressing themselves more. Actress Clara Bow was one of the ground breakers in beauty and fashion. She had short hair, thick eyebrows and red lips. Eyeliner back then was thick and heavy. Blush or Rouge was piled on. Since the 20’s the way women wear make up has changed endlessly and continues to change, even by the season. Though the make up that Clara Bow and Ava Gardner was beautiful and bold, it can be hard to pull off on a daily basis. If you are going to experiment it's best to go with only one of the looks. Choose either bold eyebrows or dark eyeliner or red lips, not all of them at once.

I love Chanel Rouge Coco lipstick in any shade of red, however, Yves St Laurent has a great line of colors and the gold retro case the lipstick is in makes you feel glamorous just holding it.

Make up forever aqua cream can be used as eyeliner and stays put all day long. They have a range of colors also, but if you are going to do the retro look, stick to basic black or brown.

Scarlett Johansson in the Dolce and Gabbanna make up ads is a modern day version of this iconic look.
